Terms of Service

This is a half-time, stipended community service position.

Founded in 1994 as Greenbrier Learning Center, Aspire! Afterschool Learning provides innovative, results-driven out-of-school time programs to support expanded learning opportunities to children at risk of falling into the achievement gap.

Learning ROCKS! is an original Aspire! program, serving 80 3rd-5th grade students each day after school across three program sites (two of which are in affordable housing developments), as well as implementing an intensive six-week, full-day summer camp. The Learning ROCKS! Program utilizes evidence-based methods to support students’ reading development and STEM/STEAM skills, as well as providing general homework help and fostering students’ social-emotional development.

Aspire!’s 2016-17 AmeriCorps team will be comprised of 13-17 full-time and half-time AmeriCorps Members. The Learning Links AmeriCorps Program provides a critical link across the three main aspects of a child’s daily experience: at school, after school, and at home. Toward this end, Aspire! partners closely with and supports both schools and parents. Specfically, AmeriCorps Members provide direct service 2-3 days/week at each of the schools where Aspire!’s students are enrolled, as well as implementing the daily Learning ROCKS! Program, after school and in the summer. And, Aspire!’s Parent Connection program provides relevant, topic-based workshops to help parents support their children’s education, as well as to develop their own skills and confidence.

  • Implement Learning ROCKS! program lessons in collaboration with program staff and other AmeriCorps Members and provide direct support and services to approximately 20-40 students each day, including appropriate supervision and assistance during homework completion time and recreational activities.
  • Plan and implement summer camp lessons, activities, guest speakers, and field trips.
  • Achieve program goals in close collaboration with the Program Manager and/or Site Coordinator and support program staff in collecting and maintaining program data.
  • Provide meaningful guidance and support for Learning ROCKS! volunteers.
  • Help in daily maintenance of the Aspire! program sites.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians and visitors in a professional and meaningful manner.
  • Actively contribute to a Community of Practice that identifies and refines best practices in child and youth programming.
  • Complete monthly AmeriCorps service reflections.
  • Participate in required AmeriCorps and/or National Days of Service projects.
  • Comply with all applicable rules, regulations, and agreements of the organization.
  • U.S. citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien
  • High school graduate or equivalent, at least 17 years old
  • Experience working with children in a structured setting
  • Commitment to local, community-based organizations
  • Self-motivated, independent, flexible, and resourceful
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Professional communication skills – ability to interact well with children, parents, teachers, volunteers, and program staff
  • A great sense of humor!
  • College degree and/or course work in Education, Social Work, or similar field
  • Bilingual (Spanish/Arabic/Amharic/other and English) skills, including reading, writing, and conversation
  • Experience in and/or knowledge of child development and primary education fields
  • Experience in positive behavioral modification practices for individuals and groups of children
  • Experience working with linguistically and culturally diverse populations
  • Term of Service: August 2016 through August 2017
  • This is a half-time, 20 hours/week commitment
  • During the school year, general hours are from 2:30 - 6:30pm.
  • AmeriCorps Members who successfully complete a 900 hour term of service are eligible to receive either an AmeriCorps Education Award of up to $2,887.50 or an end-of-service stipend.
  • AmeriCorps Members receive time off for winter break and spring break, as well as personal days off. 
  • Additional benefits include training, $530/month living stipend and student-loan forbearance or deferment. You may also be eligible for childcare assistance should you need it.
  • Aspire! is committed to strengthening AmeriCorps Members’ professional and personal development.  Corps Members will receive training in a variety of topics including: content areas, tutoring skills, child development, behavior management, education theory, leadership skills, and team building. Additionally, AmeriCorps Members will have significant autonomy and ownership over various aspects of programming and service.
